Jesienny Poznań powitał mnie pogodą iście petersburską, czyli – szary, przygnębiający deszcz z nisko zwisających nad miastem, ciężkich betonowych chmur.  Tak też wyglądały moje pierwsze dni w tym, jak się dopiero później okazało, całkiem przyjaznym mieście. Gdy pod wieczór wreszcie dotoczyłam się do swojego akademika, mieszczącego się prawie na obrzeżach Poznania i zmęczona usiadłam na tapczanie, zobaczyłam, jak spod łóżka pewnym krokiem wymaszerował dorodny karaluch. Byłam załamana. Gotowa byłam znieść wszystko – plagę myszy, szczurów, pająków czy nawet węży, ale karaluchy? Poddałam się bez walki. Jak się później okazało, udając się do wspólnej kuchni, która mieściła się na naszym piętrze, warto było zaopatrzyć się w miotłę, by tuż po włączeniu światła uderzyć nią w podłogę kilka razy, co umożliwiało bezkolizyjne dojście do kuchenek… Uderzenia w podłogę rozpędzały insekty i dawało możliwość, że tak powiem, suchą stopą zrobić te kilka kroków. Horror? Niby tak, ale jak się wkrótce przekonałam, do wszystkiego można się przyzwyczaić. A więc i do karaluchów też. Mało sympatyczny na pierwszy rzut oka dom studencki i hotel robotniczy w jednym, wkrótce stał się bliski mojemu sercu, i to z wielu powodów. Po pierwsze, w odległości mniej więcej dwóch kilometrów, w pobliżu jeziora Malta mieściło się piękne poznańskie Nowe Zoo – ogromne przestrzenie prawie wolno żyjących zwierząt. Od razu wykupiłam karnet miesięczny i nawet kilka razy w tygodniu wybierałam się tam na rolkach, pędząc pustymi alejkami pomiędzy stadami pasących się żubrów, zebr i antylop. Moimi ulubienicami były, rzecz jasna, wydry – Lutra Lutra. Mogłam je obserwować godzinami, jak bawiły się, pluskając się w wodzie, pływały na plecach, trzymając w łapach większą czy mniejszą rybę, wyskakiwały z wody, by zerknąć, kto tam zwisa nad ich wolierą i wyciąga do nich swoje niezdarne ręce. Wszystkie wolne popołudnia, już o weekendach nie wspominając spędzałam podziwiając atrakcje poznańskiego ZOO, podczas gdy moi koledzy i koleżanki ze studiów polonistycznych przesiadywali w czytelniach, zgłębiając polską literaturę średniowiecza… Oczywiście, też musiałam „przerabiać” ogromną ilość lektur, miałam jednak też swoją odskocznię, i to powodowało, że niewątpliwie byłam odmieńcem. O tym, że przy okazji obcokrajowcem, jedynym wówczas na studiach polonistycznych w Poznaniu, już nawet nie wspominam. Drugą rzeczą, jaka sprawiła, że akademik na Nieszawskiej wkrótce stał się dla mnie prawdziwym drugim domem, było to, że nasze odludzie przyciągało naprawdę niezwykłe osobowości. Jeśli ktoś nie czuł klimatu Nieszawskiej, czym prędzej składał podanie do Rektoratu o zmianę akademika – by być bliżej centrum, uczelni czy czegoś tam jeszcze. Jeśli zaś człowiek odnajdywał się w tym dziwnym miejscu, zostawał tu zazwyczaj przez cały czas studiów, czyli przez pięć, a nieraz i więcej lat. Zależy, jak komu szło. W ten sposób mieszkańcy Nieszawskiej stanowili grupę naprawdę niebanalnych osobowości. Takich jak ja polonistów nie było prawie wcale – zazwyczaj uciekali w popłochu po bliższym poznaniu warunków u nas panujących. Próbowaliśmy go przekonać, by niepotrzebny sprzęt oddawał nam w użytkowanie. Wszak salka telewizyjna – jedna na cały dziesięciopiętrowy akademik wieczorami pękała w szwach, a większość czasu, zamiast oglądać coś konkretnego, sprzeczaliśmy się o wybór kanału! Jedni chcieli Beverly Hills, inni – wiadomości, a jeszcze ktoś – mecz piłki nożnej. Przy jednym telewizorze i kilkudziesięciu chętnych do obejrzenia czegoś konkretnego rzadko udawało nam się dojść do porozumienia. W tym samym czasie Biseptol rozrzucał telewizory na prawo i na lewo… No cóż, za to – mimo iż nie był moim przyjacielem ani nawet bliskim znajomym – pamiętam go do dziś. Jak również Sajgona – olbrzyma o długich indiańskich włosach i tak samo egzotycznej urodzie. Dziwaka. Studiującego, rzecz jasna, bliżej nieokreślony kierunek. Poszukującego. Tak… To miejsce przyciągało osobowości w typie „wiecznego studenta”. Jakim cudem udawało mi się bez problemu zdawać kolejne egzaminy i z powodzeniem przechodzić na kolejny rok studiów? Ot, zagadka…
